With all due respect to game show host Monty Hall–let’s make a deal to increasing our purchasing power, without paying cash or credit. Impossible? Not if we consider the age-old tradition of bartering.
Whether it’s informal exchanges with a neighbor down the street or with our online “neighbors” at sites like Craigslist, U-Exchange, Swaptree, Swapthing or HomeExchange items you no longer want or need, (or want to share with someone else through a trade) can find a new owner (either part-time or permanent).
When the economy forces a change in our outlay of cash or credit, but our wants and needs don’t change, the answer can be bartering.
Here are some of the trades we learned about recently:
A writer and stand up comedian working at the cafe in the American Folk Art Museum in New York would swap items of clothing with her college friends from time to time. Updating a wardrobe without spending money. (Thanks for the tip, Judy!)
From Craigslist.org:
A woman who wanted to swap a Hilton Head vacation stay in exchange for dental services for her husband.
Someone willing to provide six months of eldercare in exchange for a car–any car that would at least be able to pass inspection.
An individual in Centreville, VA offered to power wash a house and deck in exchange for someone to mulch a large yard.
A sailboat owner wanted to swap the boat for a classic car.
But a story from US News & World Report about a dental practice in Mississippi seemed to illustrates just how much creativity abounds in time of need. Here’s an excerpt:
Watches, baseball cards, cupcakes and cookies, artwork, a journal entry, a bike, and even a dog all found new homes last month at Main Street Family Dentistry in Tupelo, Miss. Dentist Harry Rayburn and his staff accepted the tokens as a barter from 60 patients on a single day in May in exchange for fillings, extractions, and cleanings, mainly from uninsured patients. “A lot of them were extractions that had been hurting for two or three months and they hadn’t been able to get to a dentist because of the cost,” Rayburn says.
