Anok, a reader of the Blog Catalog (www.blogcatalog.com) and victim of identity theft shared her own experience, and hopes it can help the rest of us:
“The original thief stole my wallet, dispensing and scattering the contents who knows where, allowing easy access to my personal information to a whole lot of people.
Although I called and canceled all of my cards, and reported my wallet stolen, numerous accounts were opened in my name, and at least three cards were never properly canceled by the issuers, and they allowed the purchases to be made with the stolen cards. I’ve also discovered that in some cases, creditors reissued cards to people pretending to be me who called in with enough personal info to get a card or account.
Also request, in writing, documentation that your cards/accounts have been reported stolen for future use and reference.
